Jesse Stone – maezen

Before we get into your work, can you just tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a 22-year-old designer and illustrator based in Gibraltar. As of July 2022 I have graduated from Liverpool John Moores University with a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design & Illustration. Since starting my design journey in the early 2020s, I have sold prints all over the world and worked on many collaborative projects with music artists, book publishers and well-known companies such as Adobe, Penguin Books, GRAFIK, Flow Magazine, Pixelmator and more.

We are curious about your past and your style. When did you get started with art, what are your preferred topics and how would you describe your style?

I have been into art for as long as I can remember, my father taught me how to draw when I was young and I later realised that it was my favourite thing to do in my free time. Further on in my life, it was always my favourite subject in school and so I went from drawing to painting and then once I was able to go to university my interest fell into digital art.

This then leads to the time when I first created my page stonecollages on Instagram. It was in February 2022, a time just before the pandemic hit that I felt inspired to go on photoshop and begin digital collaging. This was a time when I had no distinct style but instead was eager to begin practising and experimenting.

My preferred topics were always minimalism and landscapes. I aimed to just consistently post new designs every day and I continued to do so for about 3 months. This allowed me to develop my style and bring in more followers.

It's been about 2 years and 10 months since I created my account, and my style has changed a lot over this period. Using bright tones, my work focuses on embracing vivid landscape designs with miniature characters, In which I aim to draw some enjoyment or sentimental feelings from my viewers.

To be part of our project, we asked each artist to address certain topics in their designs that we should all think about more often. Can you briefly explain what your designs are about and what message you want to convey with your designs for maezen.

For this collaboration with maezen I aimed to create 3 unique designs using particular earth tones. Within my minimalistic block colour style, I try to convey moments of our wandering minds within the beauty of nature. Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art, in which my main focus was to obtain a sense of tranquillity and enjoyment from the series of designs.

Last question, is there one thing which is important to you that you would like to share with our community?

An important message I would like to give out to upcoming artists who are still looking for their style is to keep experimenting, creating and believing in the form of art which you enjoy doing the most. Patience and persistence will result in your natural style appearing over time. I found that the importance of being an artist is to also inspire others, so I hope that through this project I have been able to achieve this.
